Their unusual harem-like silhouette made them perfect for high-energy moves and the padded layers provided safety during breakdance sessions. 

Crafted from nylon fabric, the pants thus bore a striking resemblance to the military paratrooper jumpsuits, hence the name ‘parachute pants’.
